Business Advice from an Angel: Any moment is the right one to start!
With his first career steps in the field of engineering and his impressive portfolio so far, today Jordi Montserrat’s main occupation is to invest in companies. Jordi has been Director of Venture Kick and venturelab for the past fifteen years, while at the same time he also acts as a personal business angel.
Meet the investors and fasten your seatbelts!
Comparing a company’s early stage development with an airplane taking off, Jordi explains that the personal relation to the company’s growth is what he likes the most, and it brought him into the industry in the first place. His position of director at Venturelab gives him similar satisfaction, it is a platform where HiTech startups are being supported to accelerate their development. Venturelab is a place where all the Tech companies in different industries, such as IT, Biotech or Mattech meet investors as well as industry partners.
Myth busting: Is it easy to find venture capital in Switzerland?
As Jordi cites, there is a good saying that Switzerland has a lot of wealth, but very little capital. In other words, despite the fact that there are wealthy people in Switzerland, the percent of them who convert their money into capital is still very small. The challenging category is actually the early stage capital or commonly known as a risky venture capital. According to Jordi, the low investment percent comes out of different reasons:
- Culture: Swiss people are not so risk-taking,
- Market: They invest in the companies at a later stage of development.
However, Jordi notices that as long as the investment is up to CHF 10 million, the startups can rely either on organized support (i.e. platform VetureKick) or on business angels. On the other hand, the high growth investment is still hard to find in Switzerland.
The common wisdom: Start whatever the conditions are!
Are you someone who is waiting for the right moment and putting on hold their venture? This experienced investor suggests to take the action instead! Simply put, if you are good, you will be able to attract the funds and you should never delay your starting because of macro conditions. As long as you have long term plans for your company, any moment is the right one! The chances in Switzerland are especially at your side if you are in the field of Mat tech, Nano tech, Robotics or Enterprise Software. Having the positive attitude when it comes to the entrepreneurship, Jordi recommends to take the advantage of Swiss ecosystem and it will surely help you grow.
