StartUpMonday #24: More Accurate and Faster – These Healthcare Startups Can Do It All
The medical world has seen amazing advancements thanks to technology that is changing and growing each and every day. There are many entrepreneurs who are working hard to create better options for our healthcare, from using our smartphones for exams, to providing faster and more accurate test results, or helping patients end up with a prescription that will be the best bet for their exact DNA makeup. Check out these three startups that are working to revolutionize healthcare.
6Over6 Can Give You an Eye Exam Wherever You Are
I don’t know anyone that likes taking time out of their day to go to the eye doctor. However, for many of us with glasses or contacts it is a necessary thing to make sure we have an accurate prescription and can see clearly. Some people delay going or skip it altogether because they either are too busy or don’t have an optometrist office near them.
6 Over 6 created a solution. Dr. Ofer Limon and Dr. Alex Zlotnik were riding bikes through South Israel when they had the idea to create an app that would allow people with access to a smartphone to obtain an accurate prescription for eye glasses or contacts. They got to work and have three apps that will soon be released. Their GlassesOn app is currently accepting beta testers and will soon be released. The app will find your pupillary distance within a range of +/-0.5mm. Also set to be released in the near future is the CopyGlass app, which will help you quickly find your most recent prescription, and I-Prescribe, which will give you an accurate prescription for nearsighted vision within 10 minutes.
With 4.5 billion people in the world in need of vision correction this is one app that should be well received.
BiOp Medical is Taking Screenings to a New Level
According to BiOp Medical’s website, “Cervical cancer is the number one cause of cancer death for women in the developed world.” Just like with any cancer, early detection is key to treatment. While many women visit doctor’s offices annually to be screened for this silent killer, it often includes long wait times to receive results and they are not often accurate. For example, in the US there are 55 million women screened, which results in 3.5 abnormal lab results. This results in many unnecessary biopsies and through it all, 30% of invasive cancer is missed.
BiOp Medical has created a product that uses optical and imaging techniques to scan the entire cervical area, locating any abnormal tissues. The test is able to locate an exact location of areas of concern and can look for cancerous and pre-cancerous tissue. Test results can be read by the physician and delivered to the patient all in one sitting; no more waiting for several days to hear the lab results.
With faster and more accurate results, Israeli based BiOp Medical is one startup you will want to keep your eye on.
Taliaz Diagnostics is Personalizing Your Prescription
If you have ever been treated for depression or know someone who has, you understand the trial-and-error game that the physician plays in prescribing medication. Each anti-depressant has risk of different side effects and each person responds differently to each medication. No one wants to take a medication that actually makes them feel worse instead of better, but that’s the risk that has always been ignored.
Israeli startup, Taliaz Diagnostics, is changing this trial-and-error guessing game of prescriptions. They have created a system that allows your DNA to be taken from a noninvasive procedure and then a chip with your DNA is run through a system that helps pinpoint the best medicine for you personally. This process will help to reduce the amount of depressed patients that end up suffering through adverse side-effects before finding a medication that fits their specific needs. The whole process works relatively quickly, with patients receiving personalized prescriptions within 24-48 hours.
The company is not stopping there. They are also working to develop chips that can be used for patients with schizophrenia and other disorders such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Bipolar affective disorder, and other anxiety disorders. This is a startup that has been much needed in the medical world.
